Walking Your Dog on Halloween Night With Kids Everywhere
Updated : October 15, 2026
The streets are full of costumed kids, lights and noise on Halloween night. For many dogs, that is a lot to handle. A few simple habits make the walk safer for everyone.
Before heading out
- Walk early: take the long walk before dark, when the kids are not yet out.
- Use up their energy: a dog that has moved is calmer at home.
- Check the gear: well-fitted harness, sturdy leash and a tag with your number.
- Bring treats: they reward calm behaviour.
During the walk
- Short leash, never a retractable one: you stay in control when a group of kids approaches.
- Keep your distance: cross the street or step back to let a group pass.
- Ask before petting: costumed kids can frighten a dog, even a friendly one. Politely say "not tonight".
- Be visible: light or reflective clothing for you, a light-up collar for them.
- Watch body language: flattened ears, a low tail, repeated yawning or lip licking signal stress.
At home during trick-or-treating
A doorbell that keeps ringing tires many dogs. Settle them in a quiet room away from the door, with a chew toy, water and some soft music. A gate or closed door also stops them from slipping outside when you open up.
If your dog is very anxious
A dog that trembles, pants or tries to flee at every noise may need a more complete plan. A dog trainer or your vet can advise you.
