Signs You Need an Emergency Vet

Updated : September 15, 2026

It isn't always easy to know if a situation calls for an emergency visit or can wait.

True emergency signs — don't wait

  • Difficulty breathing or extreme panting with no exertion
  • Bleeding that won't stop
  • Inability to stand or walk
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea, especially with blood
  • A swollen, hard belly, especially in large breeds
  • Seizures
  • Known ingestion of poison or a toxic food
  • Trauma (fall, accident, animal bite)

Signs that can wait a bit

  • Loss of appetite for 24-48 hours
  • Mild limping with no apparent pain
When in doubt, call. Most emergency clinics triage over the phone.
