Halloween Candy: The Dangers for Dogs and Cats
Updated : October 15, 2026
The Halloween candy bag is a real danger for pets, especially if it is within reach of a curious dog or a cat that rummages. Here is what to watch for.
What causes problems
- Chocolate: toxic for dogs and cats. The darker it is, the riskier.
- Xylitol: this sweetener is found in some sugar-free gum and candy. It is very dangerous for dogs.
- Raisins: found in small boxes, they are toxic for dogs.
- Wrappers and sticks: they can block the stomach or intestines.
- Hard candy: choking hazard.
How to protect them
- Store the bag up high or in a closed container, out of reach.
- Tell the kids not to give candy to the pet and not to leave their bags lying around.
- Check the floor after trick-or-treating and pick up wrappers.
- Keep a safe treat for the pet so they do not feel left out.
Important: if your pet ate candy, keep the wrapper to know the ingredients and call a veterinary clinic right away. Do not wait for symptoms.
What to do after ingestion
Note what they ate, how much and when. Then call an emergency vet and follow their instructions. Do not make your pet vomit without professional advice. For chocolate in particular, see our article My dog ate chocolate: what do I do?.
