Grapes and xylitol: two hidden dangers for your dog

Updated : October 5, 2026

Two common kitchen ingredients can make a dog very sick: grapes (fresh or dried) and xylitol.

Grapes and raisins

Grapes, raisins and products that contain them can cause serious kidney problems in some dogs. It is not always clear why one dog reacts and another does not, and a dangerous amount cannot be predicted: the safest choice is never to give them. Think of muffins, cereal bars and trail mixes.

Xylitol

Xylitol is a sweetener found in some chewing gums, sugar-free candies, toothpastes and nut butters. It can make a dog's blood sugar drop dangerously and can affect the liver. Always read the label before sharing a "sugar-free" product with your dog.

What to do

If your dog swallowed some, call an open clinic right away, even if it seems fine. Bring the packaging. Do not induce vomiting without staff advice.

Signs can be delayed. Do not wait for symptoms before calling.
