Dog Halloween Costumes: 8 Ideas and Safety Rules
Updated : October 15, 2026
Dressing up your dog for Halloween can be fun as long as the costume is comfortable and safe. Here are eight simple ideas, then the rules to follow before heading out.
8 easy costume ideas
- Pumpkin: a small orange sweater with a green stem on the back.
- Witch or wizard: a lightweight hat held by a soft strap under the chin.
- Superhero: a short cape attached loosely to the harness.
- Skeleton: a black sweater with printed bones and no detachable pieces.
- Butterfly or ladybug: small wings in light fabric on the back.
- Ghost: a light white sheet with two eye holes, used only for a photo at home.
- Pirate: a striped scarf around the neck and a headband fixed to the collar.
- Matching duo: a bandana or accessory that matches your own costume.
Safety rules
- Free to move: your dog must be able to walk, sit, lie down and relieve themselves without being hindered.
- Eyes, ears and muzzle clear: they must see, hear and breathe well.
- No small parts: buttons, bells and glued-on decorations can be swallowed.
- Try it ahead of time: get your dog used to the costume a few days earlier, in short stretches, with treats.
- No overheating: watch the breathing if the costume is thick or if your dog is indoors.
- Visible at night: add a reflective strip or a light-up collar.
Remember: if your dog freezes, tries to take it off or refuses to move, remove the costume. A bandana is often enough.
Keep identification up to date
With or without a costume, your dog should wear a tag with your phone number. With the noise and visitors, a dog slipping out is not unusual.
