Bloat in dogs: recognizing the emergency

Updated : October 7, 2026

Gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat) is a veterinary emergency that progresses very fast. It mostly affects large or deep-chested dogs, but any dog can be affected.

Signs

  • A swollen, hard or tight belly
  • Trying to vomit without producing anything
  • Heavy drooling, restlessness, being unable to lie down comfortably
  • Fast breathing, pale gums
  • Weakness or collapse

What to do

Call an open clinic immediately and leave without delay: every minute counts. Do not try to treat your dog at home and do not give water or food.

When in doubt, call. A swollen belly with retching but no vomit should always be treated as an emergency.

Lowering the risk

Your vet can advise you based on your dog's breed. Several small meals instead of one large one are often recommended, along with avoiding intense exercise right after eating.
